Housing and Management

Whether your interest is hobbyist or enterprise you need to decide how they will be housed. Consider these factors:

Network

Mining requires suitable network infrastructure.

  • 24 Hour Availability
  • Reliability
  • Low latency
  • Fast DNS service
  • Switches with sufficient Ethernet ports for each of your miners

Electrical

Mining is energy intensive and competitive. The lower the cost of electricity, the more profitable. Mining at home is difficult to manage. 120 volt circuits are less efficient than 220 volt circuits. Residential wiring may be insufficient and unsafe for the electricity required. Consult an electrician if in doubt.

Environmental

Miners generate heat and noise. They require cooling and sound abatement.

Maintenance

Miners require periodic cleaning. They accumulate dust. Dust will increase heat within your miners and shorten life expectancy. Fans and power supplies may need to be replaced.

Colocation

Miner hosting business will provide setup, operations, electricity, infrastructure, and maintenance for a fee. Their access to lower cost power may make using a hosting provider a economical option.

There are many hosting options available in the US / Canada which can be found in this database:

Thorough research is required when choosing a mining hosting facility. Shipping, setup, and time costs are substantial.

Remote Management of your Miners

Managing one ASIC device is relatively simple, the challenge begins when you are managing a fleet of them. Making sure they are all optimized and running efficiently is vital to the success of a mining operation. The ASICs need to be scanned, configured to different pools, correctly labeled, checked for firmware updates, and more.
Once your ASICs are set up it will most likely not be the last time you need to work with them. Changing pool configuration, updating firmware, installing new custom firmware, changing fan speeds, and performing other maintenance and diagnostic tests are inevitable.
Remote management of miners will require some means of accessing your network through an external IP connection.

Research products like Awesome Miner, TeamViewer14, Minerstat, etc.

Custom Firmware

Some mining operator install custom, third-party firmware to help with operations like overclocking hashrate or under-clocking for better efficiency.

Custom firmware come with the risk of waived warranty or damaged machines without recourse. So before deciding to install custom firmware make sure you understand the risk-reward tradeoff.

There is a useful Discord forum for operators interested in custom firmware:

Remote Power Management

You may wish to temporarily shutdown or restart the power to your devices. There are remote devices available for this purpose. They vary in cost, capacity, and complexity from simple 110v outlet adapters to specialized equipment from cryptocurrency supply companies.

Here is an example of a remotely managed power management system from Parallel Miner.
